TIPS FOR MEASURING

CLOTHING

1   Measure over light clothing or underwear only.

2   For better accuracy, ask someone else to measure you.

3   Don’t pull the tape measure too tight.

4   Don’t make any allowance for comfort, ease or movement as this is built into the garment size already.

5   Be honest!  To look their best and last longer, garments must fit correctly.  Clothes that fit too tightly are

unflattering, prone to excessive creasing and put too much strain on the seams, particularly on trousers,

     skirts and dresses.

6   When selecting your size, choose the larger size if your measurements fall between two sizes.

TOP HATS, BOWLER HATS & CHAUFFEUR CAPS

1  Using a textile tape measure, place it around the head where the hat will sit, usually just above the ears and

across the middle of the forehead, and over the bump at the back of the head.

2   Hold the tape firmly but not too tightly.

3   If you have no tape measure or yours is old and possibly stretched, you can use something else like a piece

of string and measure that against a ruler or steel tape measure.

4   Measure in cm and round up to the nearest cm.  As with all sizes, it’s better to go slightly larger than smaller!

GLOVES

1  Wrap a fabric tape measure around your dominant hand at its widest part, excluding the thumb.

2   Keep your hand flat/open.  Do not bend it or make a fist.

3   The tape measure should be snug against your skin, as the gloves will be, but don’t pull it too tight.

4   Note the measurement and use the Dents Gloves size chart below to confirm your glove size.

5   If you don’t have a tape measure, use a piece of string or ribbon to wrap around your hand, then lay it on

a ruler and measure the length to find your glove size.

6   If your measurement falls between two sizes, round down to the nearest half or whole number.  The leather

will stretch slightly with use.  This is especially true for hairsheep leather gloves.
